The Beautiful South's Paul Heaton and Naomi Bedford Duet
Friday, September 25, 2009 at 2:53PM I recently start recording/producing Naomi Bedford's album. The album is an album of murder ballads and will sit somewhere between alt country and contemporary folk. Naomi is a fine vocalist/songwriter and this is her second album. Her first album was produced by legendary producer Mick Glossop so it certainly is a huge compliment to be asked to do the follow up album.
One of the songs on the album is written and features The Beautiful South's frontman/writer Paul Heaton (also of The Housemartins). We had a very creative session recently with Paul coming in to work on the song and lay down his vocals. The song is called "The Ferryboat Inn" and Paul wrote the song especially for Naomi's album. The Song is also a murder ballad!
Paul's performance during his vocal take was breathtaking as was Naomi's. I'll be doing my thing on the track and here is a video of the guide vocal part of the session. We did live guitar takes and guide vocals (without a click..although I'll beat map Logic to create a click which follows the natural tempo of the song). Live drums are next I reckon. Paul Simmons (The Men They Couldn't Hang) did a wonderful job on guitar ...nailed it in one!
Here's a video from the 1st session.
